Save Energy This Summer AND Keep Your A/C Running with These 10 Essential Tips!

It pays to think about conserving energy in our home – literally. After all, summer is the time to spend your money on vacations with your family and pool parties with your friends, not on wasted energy!

Usually, the first thing people tend to blame when it comes to wasted energy is the air conditioning. So then the temperature gets turned higher and higher, making your house a simmering sauna in the summertime.

Luckily, there are many ways that you can save energy this summer without saying, “Adios!” to your air conditioning. Check out our ten essential tips here!

1. Weather-strip Your Doors – Are you trying to cool down your whole neighborhood? No? Then keep YOUR air-conditioning inside YOUR house! Check your home to make sure all of the doors have the proper seals they need to keep your home running efficiently. This is a cheap and effective way to save energy!

2. Grill On! – Don’t heat your home with appliances. Grilling out is the BEST option, since all the heat stays outside. If it’s raining, try to avoid using the oven by cooking with the stove top or microwave. And instead of using the dishwasher, try to let your dishes air-dry!

3. Air-Dry Your Beach Towels – It’s definitely that time of the year in which sand, sun, and surf reign supreme. However, using your beach towel for a quick dry-off doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s dirty. Try to break the automatic habit of throwing the towel in the laundry, and try hanging it up outside! Let the sun use its energy to foot the bill!

4. Schedule an Air-Conditioner Maintenance Check With Us! – The best way to save energy is to make sure your cooling system is working properly. It never hurts to double check; repairing a small refrigerant leak isn’t costly! Most importantly, a check-up can save you money on your utility bills!

5. Don’t Let Your Computer Sleep! – “Sleep” does not equal “off.” Most people don’t realize that energy is still being burned when the computer is on “sleep” or “hibernate” mode. Over half of the energy used by computers is when the owner thinks it is turned off. So go ahead – give your computer a PROPER rest. Hit that power button!

6. Plant Trees – Go green! Planting trees is not only good for the environment, but also great for saving energy. A line of trees can block the sun from hitting your house, which will make it easier to keep your house cool. It’s also a great place to hang a summer hammock, too!

7. Check Your Water Heater – Water heating can account for 14-25% of energy consumed by your home. Most water heaters are set at 140 degrees Fahrenheit, but the average home only needs it to be set at 120 degrees to function properly.  Call us today to schedule an appointment to check your settings to save you money and energy!

8. Raise Your Thermostat – When you are gone to work, shopping, or on vacation, be sure to raise your thermostat! Raising the temperature will save you energy, and, of course, money. Even if you are not willing to raise it a lot, just a degree or two will lead to a noticeable savings.

9. Try Cold Water Washes –Did you know that washing every load on the hot/warm cycle for a year is equivalent to burning about 182 gallons of gas in a car? Give your water heater a break and try to wash your clothes in cold water whenever possible.

10. Turn Out the Lights – Take advantage of daylight; after all, it’s FREE! Do you really need the lights on to wash dishes or watch TV during the day? Think about what you’re doing and be aware if the lights need to be turned on or off. Also, teach your kids energy-saving habits such as turning off the lights when you leave a room.

The next time you cook, leave a room, or go to work, try to keep these tips in mind. It is easy to save energy in your everyday life without sacrificing your air conditioner, once you are aware of how to do it.
