Could Your HVAC Be Making You Sick?

It’s the middle of winter, and everywhere around you, you see people coughing, sneezing, wheezing, and complaining of feeling ill. Someone says, “Man, I don’t feel well today,” and another replies, “Well, something’s been going around lately!”

Sure, influenza and cold viruses can get tossed back and forth to one another during this season, but there is another perpetrator hidden right under your nose that might be causing all these health issues: your HVAC system!

The HVAC system (which stands for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning) is one of the most important parts of a building as it controls the temperature, humidity, and air purity levels of a house or building. Because they directly impact all the aforementioned levels, it’s crucial that the system is maintained for the sake of you and your family’s physical health. In fact, the temperature, humidity, and air purity levels can become a breeding ground for bacteria, viruses, dust, and other allergens to swoop in and attack you and your family!

Even if these issues don’t last for long in a well-regulated home, health issues can still crop up if the air is too dry or humid or if the temperatures are uncomfortable. In fact, while it’s tempting to save a bit of money, you could wind up getting sick because you choose to keep your home at an uncomfortable temperature (by the way, the ideal temperature for your thermostat during the winter is 68 degrees Fahrenheit)!

And guess what? Dirty ducts can make you sick, too! Total Health and Better Health magazines both state that “1 [out] of 6 people who suffer from allergies do so because of the direct relationship to fungi and bacteria in the air duct system.” Children and older folks are especially prone to getting sick because of dirty ducts.

Really, it does make sense. All that pet dander, smoke, dust mites, and even dead skin cells have to go SOMEWHERE! Most of the time, they wind up getting trapped inside your ducts, which creates a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses. Every time your HVAC kicks on, you and your family breathe in all that dander, smoke, and yes, your dead skin cells, too. Disgusting, isn’t it?

So what should you do if you think you HVAC system is the culprit to your chronic or periodic health issues? First of all, look for clues that something may be amiss. If you notice a layer of dust covering your furnishings whenever your HVAC kicks on or if you smell musty or stale smells as soon as the system starts, then that means that your ducts are dirty and are begging to be cleaned. You should get your system checked out by a professional!

Another effective trick is to keep a health diary of sorts about when and where in your home your health problems occur. Maybe you can see if the issues and location of the home coincide, and that can help you figure out the problem more easily.
